Whitburn, West Lothian

Whitburn is a small town in West Lothian, Scotland, halfway between Scotlands's two largest cities, being about 27 miles east of Glasgow and 23 miles west of Edinburgh. The nearest major towns are Bathgate, 4 miles and Livingston, 8 miles . The town was once dominated by Polkemmet Colliery – a large coal mine – but this was closed as a result of damage by underground flooding during the 1984-85 miners' strike and never re-opened.

Whitburn, par. and vil. (police burgh) with ry. sta., Linlithgowshire - par., 9775 ac., pop. 6326; vil., on river Almond, 3½ miles SW. of Bathgate, pop. 1200; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank. The par. abounds in coal and ironstone.
