Tranent, East Lothian

Tranent is a town in East Lothian (formerly Haddingtonshire), Scotland. It is near the A1 road and about 11 miles east of Edinburgh. It is one of the oldest towns in East Lothian, and built on a gentle slope, about 300 feet above sea level. Population of the town is about 10,000 people.

Tranent, police burgh and par., Haddingtonshire, 1¼ mile SE. of Prestonpans ry. sta. and 9½ miles E. of Edinburgh - par., 5919 ac., pop. 5198; burgh, pop. 2235; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; has an iron foundry and agricultural implement works; collieries are in the vicinity.
