Heworth, Gateshead

Heworth is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. The village's name appears in written records from 1091 as Hewarde, and later as Hewrtha, and in 1300 as Hewrthe. In common with most villages in the area, its history has been intertwined with the fortunes of the quarrying and mining industries.

Heworth.-- township and vil., Jarrow par., N. Durham - township (partly in Gateshead bor.), 2811 ac., pop. 17,138; pop. of town part, 762; vil., 2 miles SE. of Gateshead; P.O., T.O.; has shipbuilding yards, chemical works, and paper-making; extensive collieries are in the neighbourhood.
