Prestwich is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies close to the River Irwell, 3.3 miles north of Manchester city centre, 3.1 miles north of Salford and 4.7 miles south of Bury. Historically a part of Lancashire, Prestwich's early history is marked by its status as the seat of the ancient parish of Prestwich-cum-Oldham, in the hundred of Salfordshire.

(containing the mun. bor. of Oldham), 22,023 ac., pop. 179,230; town and township, 4 miles NW. of Manchester and 5 miles S. of Bury, 1917 ac., pop. 8627; P.O., T.O.; has cotton mfrs., and contains numerous villas of Manchester merchants; at Prestwich is the county lunatic asylum.
