Chirk, Wrexham (Y Waun)

Chirk is a small town and local government community, the lowest tier of local government, part of Wrexham County Borough in Wales. It has a population of over 4,000. It is situated between Wrexham and Oswestry and has been part of the County Borough since local government reorganisation in 1996. The border with the English county of Shropshire is immediately south of the town, on the other side of the River Ceiriog. The town is served by Chirk railway station.

Chirk, par. and vil. with ry. sta., SE. Denbighshire, on river Ceiriog, 9 miles SW. of Wrexham and 192 miles NW. of London, 4773 ac. (90 water), pop. 2171; P.O., t.o. Market-day, Saturday. The Ellesmere Canal is carried across the river here by an aqueduct; there is also a railway viaduct. In the neighbourhood of the vil. are coal mines. Chirk Castle is 1½ mile W. of sta.
