Conisbrough, Doncaster in John Bartholomew's "Gazetteer of the British Isles" (1887)

Conisbrough, par. and vil. with ry. sta., S. div. West-Riding Yorkshire, on river Don, 5 miles SW. of Doncaster, 4296 ac., pop. 2706; P.O., T.O., called Conisborough; has brick and tile making, and quarries in the magnesian limestone. C. Castle, now roofless, the property of the Duke of Leeds, is supposed to be of great antiquity. It is the residence of Athelstane in Ivanhoe. In the neighbourhood are numerous traces of both the early Britons and the Romans.
