Crediton, Devon

Crediton is a town and civil parish in the Mid Devon district of Devon in England. It stands on the A377 Exeter to Barnstaple road at the junction with the A3072 road to Tiverton, about 7 miles north west of Exeter. It has a population of 6,837. The town is situated in the narrow vale of the River Creedy, between two steep hills and is divided into two parts, the east or old town and the west or new town.

Crediton, market town and par. with ry. sta., N. Devon, on r. Greedy, near its junction with the Exe, 8m. NW. of Exeter -- par., 12,309 ac., pop. 5747; town, pop. 4165; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 1 newspaper. Market-day, Saturday. C. is an ancient town; it was the seat of a bishopric from 909 to 1049, and hi the reign of Edward I. it returned 2 members to Parliament. It has, however, assumed a modern appearance, the old houses having been destroyed by the fires of 1743 and 1769. Its chief industries now are shoemaking and agriculture.
