Devizes, Wiltshire

Devizes is a market town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England. The town is about 10 miles southeast of Chippenham and about 11 miles east of Trowbridge. Devizes serves as a centre for banks, solicitors and shops, with a large open market place where a market is held once a week. It has nearly five hundred listed buildings, a large open Green at the heart of the town, some notable churches and a Town Hall. Its development has grown around the 11th century Norman castle.

Devizes, municipal borough and market town with ry. sta., N. Wilts, on the Kennet and Avon Canal, 21 miles NW. of Salisbury and 86 miles W. of London, 907 ac., pop. 6645; P.O., T.O., 3 Banks, 3 newspapers. Market-day, Thursday; has mfrs. of silk and snuff, and a large foundry, where agricultural steam-engines and implements are made. Malting is carried on. The corn market is one of the most important in the West of England. St John's Church dates from the reign of Henry I. D. returned 1 member to Parl. until 1885.
