Wimborne Minster, Dorset

Wimborne Minster is a market town in the East Dorset district of Dorset in South West England, and the name of the Church of England church in that town. The central town has a population of 6,418 (according to the 2001 Census) and is situated at the confluence of the River Stour and River Allen, five miles north of Poole. The Mayor of Wimborne is currently John Burden. The town and its administrative area is served by eleven councillors and one from the nearby ward of Cranfield.

Wimborne (or Wimborne Minster), market town and par. with ry. sta., Dorset, in E. of co., at confluence of rivers Allen and Stour, 7 miles N. of Poole by rail, 11,966 ac., pop. 5390; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-day, Friday. Wimborne is an ancient place, occupying the site of a Roman station, and known to the Saxons as Wimburnhamynstre. Its church, a cathedral-like edifice, was founded by Edward the Confessor, and is a remarkable relic of antiquity. Among the other buildings in Wimborne are a fine grammar school and an endowed school. Coachbuilding is carried on; there are mfrs. of buttons and woollen hose.
