Godalming, Surrey

Godalming is a historic market town, civil parish and administrative centre of the Borough of Waverley in Surrey, England, 4 miles SSW of Guildford, traversing the banks of the River Wey in a hilly part of the London commuter belt and Green Belt. Godalming is 30.5 miles southwest of London and shares a three-way twinning arrangement with the towns of Joigny in France and Mayen in Germany. Friendship links are in place with the state of Georgia and Moscow.

Godalming.-- mun. bor., market town, and par., W. Surrey, on river Wye, 34½ miles SW. of London by rail -- par., 9049 ac., pop. 8640; bor., 90 ac., pop. 2505; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks. Market-days, Wednesday and Saturday. The town was first incorporated in 1572, but it is said to be of Saxon origin. Mfrs. of stockings, gloves, flannels, paper, &c., are carried on to a small extent. There are 2 stations -- Godalming Old Station (terminus of London and South-Western Ry.) and Godalming New Station, on direct Portsmouth line.
