It is 12 miles from the City of London and immediately north of the M25 motorway, forming part of the Greater London Urban Area and London commuter belt. Whilst much of the town is located within Hertfordshire, part of Waltham Cross is located within the administrative area of Greater London to the south.

Waltham Cross, eccl. dist. and ry. sta., Cheshunt par., Herts, in SE. of co., on S. side and wholly in town of Cheshunt, pop. 3391; P.O., T.O.; takes its name from a "Queen Eleanor's cross" of Edward I., restored in 1833; the sta. serves for the town of Waltham Abbey (in Essex), 1 mile E.
