Ewell, Surrey

Ewell is a town in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, close to the southern boundary of Greater London and within the Greater London Urban Area, 12.1 miles south-south-west of Charing Cross. Despite its growing population it is still referred to as a village by locals. Ewell is at the head of the Hogsmill river, a tributary of the River Thames. Neighbouring towns and villages include Cheam, Chessington, Epsom, Tolworth, Stoneleigh and Worcester Park.

Ewell.-- par., township, and vil. with ry. sta., W. Surrey, 2½ miles N. of Epsom and 16 SW. of London -- par., 4258 ac., pop. 3389; township, 2437 ac., pop. 3002; P.O., T.O., Market-day, Thursday. At Ewell are numerous villas of London traders. In the district are potteries, and brick and tile works; also flour-mills and powder-mills. Large cattle fairs are held in May, and sheep fairs in October. In NE. vicinity of vil. is the seat of Ewell Castle.
