Finsbury, Islington

Finsbury is a district of central London, England. It lies immediately north of the City of London and Clerkenwell, west of Shoreditch, and south of Islington and City Road. It is in the south of the London Borough of Islington. The Finsbury Estate is in the western part of the district. The eastern part of the district is now sometimes known as St Luke's.

Finsbury, parl. bor., Middlesex, in N. of London, 1078 ac., pop. 198,694; consists of St Luke and Clerkenwell pars., Holborn dist., St Giles dist., &c., and returns 3 members -- 3 divisions, viz., Holborn, Central, and East, 1 member for each; its representation was increased in 1885, when its limits were reduced by the formation of Islington parl. bor.

FINSBURY, one of the newly-enfranchised metropolitan boroughs, comprising parts of the Finsbury and Holborn divisions of the hundred of Ossulstone, county of Middlesex, with some places of exempt jurisdiction; the whole containing 265,043 inhabitants. It sends two members to parliament, under the provisions of the Reform act: the right of election is vested in the £10 householders, and the returning officer is annually appointed by the sheriff.—See Islington, Clerkenwell, &c.
