A borstal was a type of youth detention centre in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. In India, it is known as a borstal school. Indian borstal schools are used exclusively for the imprisonment of minors or juveniles. Their objective is to ensure the care, welfare and rehabilitation of young offenders in an environment suitable for children and to keep them away from the contaminating atmosphere of a prison.
